The flying public may find this unbelievable, but the first time any “first officer” steps into and actually flies their first airliner is with paying passengers on board — in my case, 37 of them. Yes, by this time you’ve been through months of company indoctrination, simulator training and grueling checkrides, so are qualified on paper for certain. And of course, there’s a training Captain (baby)sitting next to you. But let’s be serious, like an equestrian making the move from a carnival pony to a thoroughbred, that airplane was flying me on Day 1, not the other way around. Here’s me in front of everyone’s favorite — LaGuardia Airport, winter 2006.
