The path to Solo

When you learn how to fly, there is nothing easy about it. It’s a really steep learning curve. There are 5 distinct complex skills that you need to develop — (1) hand/eye coordination of controlling a machine in a multi-axis environment that you’re not used to, (2) learning the language of aviation and how to communicate on the radios to air traffic control, (3) programming and controlling your avionics, (4) learning and understanding aerodynamics and the systems that keep your airplane flying and finally, (5) navigating to/finding airports/avoiding other airplanes and landing. At some point, the learning curve will flatten, these skills will gel together and you’ll gain basic situational awareness. At this point, you’re ready to fly the airplane “solo”.
